History of the Church
This church has been around for a long time! It was first built in the 13th century, which means it's over 700 years old. Imagine all the history it has seen!
In 1911, the church's tower was repaired and made strong again. Today, St Mary's Church shares its parish with St Wilfrid's Church, Screveton. This means they work together to serve their communities.
Special Headstones in the Churchyard
The churchyard, which is the area around the church, has three old headstones that are also very special. They are listed as Grade II listed buildings. This means they are important historical items too.
- One headstone on the left has a curved top and fancy carved designs. It belongs to Elenor Wollerton and dates back to 1762. A person named James Sparrow signed it.
- The headstone in the middle has a square top with beautiful scrollwork and leaf patterns. It is for John Woolerton from 1740 and was made in a style similar to James Sparrow's work.
- The headstone on the right has a stepped, arched top and more scroll designs. It belongs to Thomas Woolerton and is from 1739. It is also signed by 'J. Sparrow', showing he made it.
