St Mary's Church, also known as St Mary on the Sea Church, is a Roman Catholic church located in Grimsby, Lincolnshire. It's a special building that was constructed between 1880 and 1883. You can find it in the town centre, right on the corner of Heneage Road and Wellington Street. A famous architect named Matthew Ellison Hadfield and his son designed it. The church is considered a Grade II listed building, which means it's an important historical structure.

History of St Mary's Church

Building the Church

The land for St Mary's Church was bought in 1858 by Sir John Sutton. He was a local landowner. However, he passed away before any building work could begin. Construction finally started in 1880, more than 30 years after the land was purchased.

Most of the money for the church came from Thomas Young of Kingerby Hall. He also helped pay for several other churches in Lincolnshire. The church was designed by Matthew Ellison Hadfield and his son, Charles Hadfield. They were also the architects for big cathedrals like Salford Cathedral and Sheffield Cathedral.

The original plan for St Mary's Church was to make it twice as big. But this would have been too expensive. So, a smaller church was built instead. The church officially opened on August 19, 1883. The Bishop of Nottingham, Edward Bagshawe, was there for the opening.

The church has a special altar called the Sacred Heart altar. It was designed by a company called Pugin & Pugin. Georgina Fraser gave this altar to the church. She was the daughter of George Heneage. The church also has beautiful stained-glass windows made by the Hardman & Co. studio.

Changes and Artwork

In 1908, new paintings were added to the sanctuary area of the church. These artworks were created by the studio of Nathaniel Westlake. More paintings were added in the 1930s. One of these was a dado frieze that showed fish. It went all around the inside walls of the church.

In the 1960s, these wall paintings were covered up with paint. Then, in 1979, the church was reorganized. A new altar and a lectern (a stand for reading) were put in. In 1983, a narthex was created at the back of the church. This is an entrance area.

In the 2000s, people worked to uncover the old wall paintings. They also restored the church's organ, which was from the 1920s.

Church Services

St Mary's Church holds several services each week. There is a Sunday Mass in Polish at 6:00 PM on Saturday evening. There is also an English Mass on Sunday at 11:00 AM. During the week, Masses are usually held on Wednesday at 7:00 PM and on Thursday at 10:00 AM.
