A Look Back: The Church's History
St. Mary's Church in Wollaton Park was built a long time ago, opening its doors in 1939. A talented architect named Thomas Cecil Howitt designed the building.
When it first opened, the church was looked after by helpers from Holy Trinity Church, Lenton. But in 1957, St. Mary's became its own parish church. This means it became the main church for its local area.
Inside the Church: Special Features
St. Mary's Church has some interesting parts inside. One of these is the font. A font is a special basin used for baptisms, which is a ceremony where people become part of the Christian church.
The font at St. Mary's is a copy of a very old one. It looks like a font from the 12th century that used to be at Lenton Priory. That original font is now at Holy Trinity Church, Lenton.
The Church Organ
The church has a beautiful organ, which is a large musical instrument. It was built in 1938 by a company called J. W. Walker & Sons Ltd.
The organ is set up in a special way at the back of the church. Its main parts are split on either side. The part where the organist sits and plays, called the console, is separate. It is placed near the choir stalls on the right side of the church.
