St Mary Magdalene, Bailgate is an old and important church in Lincoln, England. It is a Grade II listed building, which means it's officially recognized as a special historical place. The church is named after Mary Magdalene, a friend of Jesus.

History of St Mary Magdalene Church

This church is located in an area called the Exchequer. It's near where a much older Saxon church, St Mary's, once stood. That very old church was even mentioned in the Domesday book, a famous survey from 1086.

The current church building started being built in the late 1100s or early 1200s. It was officially opened in 1317. Later, in 1695, it had to be rebuilt. This was because it was damaged in 1644 during the English Civil War by soldiers fighting against the King.

In 1882, a person named George Frederick Bodley did some work to change parts of the church. This included adding a screen near the altar and a case for the organ.

Church Leaders and Organists

Over many centuries, different people have served as leaders and musicians at St Mary Magdalene Church. These roles include vicars, rectors, and organists. They have all helped the church serve its community throughout its long history.

The Church Organ

The church has a special musical instrument called an organ. In 1864, a type of organ called a Lieblich organ was put in. A new organ was installed in 1866 by T. H. Nicholson from Lincoln.

This organ has been rebuilt and updated several times. Henry Jackson of Lincoln rebuilt it in 1914. Later, in 1945, Cousans of Lincoln also worked on rebuilding it. You can find more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
