St. Mary of the Angels is a beautiful old church in Everton, Liverpool. It was built in 1907 and used to be a Roman Catholic church. Inside, it has amazing marble decorations that were brought from other places to make it look like churches in Rome, Italy.
About St. Mary's Church
This special church was paid for by a woman named Amy Elizabeth Imrie. She was a nun who belonged to the Poor Clare Sisters. Amy became very wealthy when her uncle, William Imrie, passed away in 1906. He was part of the family that owned the famous White Star Line shipping company.
Why Is It Special?
St. Mary of the Angels is a Grade II Listed Building. This means it's an important historical building that needs to be protected. Even the inside of the church, with its beautiful Italian style, is protected.
What Happened to the Church?
The church was closed by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Liverpool in 2001. They have said it will not open again as a church. In 2002, the Liverpool City Council stopped them from taking out the special decorations and fittings from inside the church.
After it closed, the church was rented out for a few years. From 2001 to 2005, a charity called the Whitechapel Centre used it. This charity helps people who are homeless in Liverpool. Since 2006, the building has been used by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic orchestra. They use it as a practice space and call it "The Friary." The public cannot visit the church anymore.
