St Mary the Virgin's Church in Newton Solney is a very old and important church. It is part of the Church of England. This church is located in the village of Newton Solney, in Derbyshire, England. It is so special that it has a Grade II* listed status. This means it is a historically important building.
History of the Church
This church was built a long, long time ago, in the 1300s. That makes it hundreds of years old!
Church Restoration Work
The church was given a big makeover between 1880 and 1882. A person named Frederick Josias Robinson led this work. During this time, the south side of the church was made bigger. This created more space inside. The area where the organ sits was also extended.
A brand new wooden roof was put over the entire church. The old plaster was removed from the walls, making them look fresh. The old church benches were replaced with new, open ones. The floors were lowered by about 18 inches. New tiles from the William Godwin Company were laid down. A new oak pulpit was also added. A special decorative screen, called a reredos, was put up by Robert Ratcliff. All this work cost around £3,700 at the time. The church was ready and reopened on Easter Monday in 1882.
