History of the Church Building
The church you see today was built a long time ago, between 1897 and 1898. It was designed by a famous architect named George Frederick Bodley. He created the plans for this beautiful church.
This new church took the place of an older, smaller church that used to be there. The company that built it was called Stephens and Baslow, from Bristol. The lovely stained-glass windows were made by Burlison and Grylls.
By 1935, the very first church building was in bad shape. It was old and falling apart, so it had to be taken down.
How the Church Looks
Outside the Church
The church is built using two types of stone: Bath stone and Ancaster stone. These are special kinds of stone that look very nice. The church walls are made of smooth, cut blocks of stone called ashlar.
The church has thin, strong supports on its walls called buttresses. These help the walls stand up straight. The tower of the church has a special top that looks like the top of a castle wall. This is called crenellated. There is also a clock on the tower.
Inside the Church
When you go inside, you will see windows with three sections. These windows are set back into the walls. There are also decorative shapes called quatrefoils, which look like four-leaf clovers.
The floor inside the church is made of stone. The ceiling above the main part of the church, called the nave, is shaped like a tunnel and is made of wood.
You can also find an organ inside the church. It is on a special platform, or mezzanine level, at the east side of the north aisle. The reredos, which is a decorated screen behind the altar, is made of wood. It has been carved with designs and covered in gold.
