About St Michael's Church
St Michael's Church was built to be a large place of worship. It can hold up to 1,000 people inside. This was important because many workers from local factories and industries needed a place to go to church.
Building the Church
The first step in building the church was laying the foundation stone. This happened in 1852. The stone was laid by William Legge, 4th Earl of Dartmouth. He was an important local figure from Sandwell Hall.
After the church was finished, it was officially opened. This special ceremony is called a consecration. The church was consecrated by John Lonsdale, who was the Bishop of Lichfield at the time.
