Building the Church

The idea for St Michael's Church started in 1851, and it was finished in 1855. At the time, Handsworth was part of Staffordshire, a different county. The church was built to hold many people, especially the workers from the local factories and businesses. It can seat about 1,000 people.

Important People Involved

The first stone for the church was laid in 1852 by William Legge, 4th Earl of Dartmouth. He was an important person from Sandwell Hall. The church was officially opened and blessed by John Lonsdale, who was the Bishop of Lichfield at that time.

Changes Over Time

In 1907, a part of the area that St Michael's Church served became a new area for another church. This new church was called St Peter's Church, Handsworth. This change helped to serve the growing community better.
