St Nicholas’ Church, located in West Looe, Cornwall, is a Church of England parish church. It is a special place of worship for the local community.

History of St Nicholas’ Church

Early Beginnings

This church is named after Saint Nicholas, who was a famous bishop. It was built a very long time ago, either in the 1200s or 1300s. A family called D’Aubigny, who owned the land in Looe, built it.

On July 11, 1336, people from a nearby place called Talland and a knight named Sir John Dawnay gave money to the church. A bishop named John Grandisson from Exeter officially approved this gift.

Changes Over Time

During a time in English history called the Commonwealth of England (when England was not ruled by a king), the church building was used for other things. It became the Guildhall for West Looe, which was like a town hall and a prison.

When King Charles II became king again, the building was used as a church once more. However, this did not last long. It soon went back to being the Guildhall and prison until 1852.

Restoration and Reopening

In 1852, the church was brought back to life for public worship. This happened thanks to the hard work of the vicar, Mr. Seymour, and John Francis Buller. Local builders helped with the work, supervised by Captain C. Cocks.

During this restoration, a new section was added to the church. It reopened for services on All Saints’ Day in 1852. The chancel, which is the part of the church near the altar, was made longer. Wood from a ship called the St Josef was used for this. This ship was captured by Admiral Nelson in a famous sea battle in 1797.
