History of St Patrick's Church
St Patrick's Church has a long history, starting with its construction and continuing with many updates over the years.
How Was the Church Built?
In 1831, the land for the church was rented from the Ramsden family, who owned a lot of land in the area. Building work started that same year. Joseph Kaye, a well-known architect from Huddersfield, designed the church. The church officially opened its doors on 26 September 1832.
Changes and Decorations Over Time
The inside of the church has been updated several times to keep it looking good and working well.
- In 1874, the church's interior was redecorated. A new stained-glass window was also added to the sanctuary area.
- By 1889, new seating was put in for people to sit on, and a new organ was installed for music during services.
- In 1962, more changes were made. A new porch was added to the entrance, and a new altar and reredos (a decorated screen behind the altar) were installed.
- Later, the side altars were removed, and a lectern (a stand for reading) and a font (a basin for baptisms) were added.
- From 1980 to 1981, the outside of the church was cleaned.
- In 1982, the church was rearranged again. A new altar, ambo (a stand for readings), font, and a stand for the tabernacle (where the Eucharist is kept) were all installed. These new pieces were made from stone found nearby.
- The newest organ, specifically built for St Patrick's Church, was installed in 2009.
The Parish of the Holy Redeemer
In 2007, several Catholic parishes in Huddersfield joined together to form the Parish of the Holy Redeemer. This new parish includes St Patrick's Church, Holy Family Church in Slaithwaite, and Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Sheepridge. Two other churches, Saint James and Saint Brigid, were closed and their communities joined the new parish.
