History of St Patrick's Church
Building the Church
In 1831, the land for St Patrick's Church was rented from a local family called the Ramsdens. Construction started that same year. Joseph Kaye, an architect from Huddersfield, designed the building. The church officially opened its doors on September 26, 1832.
Decorating and Updating the Church
Over the years, the church has been updated and decorated many times.
- In 1874, the inside of the church was redecorated. A beautiful new stained-glass window was added to the sanctuary, which is the area around the altar.
- In 1889, new seats were put in for the people attending services. A new organ was also installed, which is a large musical instrument used during worship.
More changes happened in the 20th century:
- In 1962, the church was rearranged inside. A new entrance area, called a porch, was added. A new altar and a reredos (a decorated screen behind the altar) were also installed.
- Later, some side altars were removed, and a lectern (a stand for reading) and a font (a basin for baptisms) were added.
- From 1980 to 1981, the outside of the church was cleaned.
In 1982, the church was rearranged again. A new altar, ambo (a stand for readings), font, and a special stand for the tabernacle (where the Eucharist is kept) were installed. These new pieces were made from stone found nearby. In 2009, a new organ was installed. This was the first organ specifically built for St Patrick's Church.
The Parish of Holy Redeemer
In 2007, several Catholic parishes in the Huddersfield area joined together. St Patrick's Parish merged with Holy Family Parish in Slaithwaite and Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Sheepridge. Two other parishes, Saint James and Saint Brigid, also joined, but their churches had already closed. All these parishes became one big parish called the Parish of the Holy Redeemer.
Today, there are several Masses held each weekend for the Holy Redeemer Parish:
- At St Patrick's Church, there are three Sunday Masses: one on Saturday evening at 5:30 PM, and two on Sunday at 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
- Our Lady of Lourdes Church has one Sunday Mass at 10:15 AM on Sunday morning.
- Holy Family Church has one Sunday Mass at 9:00 AM.
