St Peter's Church in Leicester is a special building. It is a Grade II listed building, which means it is important and protected because of its history and architecture. This church is part of the Church of England and is located in the Highfields area of the city.
A Look Back in Time
The story of St Peter's Church began a long time ago. The first stone was placed on November 14, 1872. A bishop from Peterborough helped start the building work.
The church was built to remember a person named Richard Curzon-Howe, 1st Earl Howe. Because of this, it was first called the Howe Memorial Church. A famous architect named George Edmund Street designed the building.
The church was officially opened and blessed on April 18, 1874, by the Bishop of Peterborough.
Over many years, parts of the church started to wear out. In 1968, the tall spire on top of the church had to be taken down. By 2014, the tower and roof were in very poor condition. The church was even added to a list of buildings that were "at risk" of falling apart.
But good news came! Between 2018 and 2021, a lot of repair work was done. Money for these repairs came from different groups, including the Heritage Lottery, Leicester City Council, and the church itself. Thanks to this help, the tower, its roof, and the main roof of the church were all fixed.
The Church Organ
Inside St Peter's Church, there is a large pipe organ. It was first built in 1875 by a person named Joshua Porritt. Later, in 1910, another company called Stephen Taylor and Son made many changes to it. This made the organ sound even better. You can find out more details about this organ on a special website called the National Pipe Organ Register.
