St Peter's Church in Prickwillow, Cambridgeshire, England, is a church that used to be part of the Church of England. It is no longer used for regular church services.

History of the Church

Building and Design

This church was built between 1866 and 1868. It was designed by an architect named R R Rowe. The church is made of brick and stands on a special foundation of wooden piles. This helps to support the building in the ground.

The church has a main area called a nave. It also has a bell tower in the middle and parts that stick out on the sides, known as transepts. There is also a south porch, which is an entrance area.

Special Features

One very interesting part of the church was its font. A font is a large basin used for baptisms. This font was made of Italian marble, possibly from a place called Carrara. It had beautiful carvings.

This special font was originally given to Ely Cathedral in 1693. Later, it was moved to St Peter's Church. The font cover, which protects the font, hangs from the ceiling. It is held up by a figure of an angel.

Another important item was the church bell. This bell was made in 1691 and was also a gift from Ely Cathedral.

Church Records and Closure

The church kept records of important events. The first baptism recorded there was in 1874. Marriage records started even earlier, in 1864. The church does not have its own graveyard. People from Prickwillow who passed away were buried in nearby Ely.

St Peter's Church stopped being used for regular services in 2008. In 2011, it was officially declared "redundant." This means it was no longer needed for its original purpose. After this, the special marble font was returned to Ely Cathedral.
