The Story of St Peter's Church
The church you see today is not the first St Peter's Church in Birmingham. The very first one was built in a different area called Dale End. It was opened in 1827.
Building the New Church
The original St Peter's Church in Dale End closed down in 1899. It was then taken apart. The money and resources from that church were used to build a brand new one. This new church was designed by a famous architect named Frank Barlow Osborn. Construction started in 1901. The church was finished and officially opened on July 19, 1902. The Bishop of Worcester led the opening ceremony.
Becoming a Parish Church
Once the new church was ready, it became a parish church in 1902. A parish is like a local area that a church serves. St Peter's parish was created from parts of two nearby parishes: All Saints' Church, Hockley and St Mark's Church, Ladywood.
A New Chapter for the Church
St Peter's Church served as a Church of England building for many years. However, in 2001, the Church of England decided to close it. The local parish then joined with St John's Church, Ladywood. The building was later sold to a different church group. In January 2004, it officially became the New Testament Church of God the Rock. It continues to be a place of worship today.
