St Peter's Church is a very old and important church in a village called Walpole St Peter in Norfolk, England. It's an Anglican church, which means it belongs to the Church of England. This church is one of the biggest in Norfolk and is sometimes called "the Cathedral of the Fens" because it's so grand. It's also a Grade 1 listed building, meaning it's a very special historic place that needs to be protected.
History of St Peter's Church
The oldest part of St Peter's Church is its tower. This tower was built way back in the 13th century, which is over 700 years ago!
Building the Church
By the 15th century, a much larger church was added to the tower. This new church was about 160 feet long. Many of its windows were built in a style called "Perpendicular." This style was popular in England during the late Middle Ages.
Inside the church, you can still see some wooden benches that are also from the 15th century. There's even a special box for donations to the poor, carved in 1639. A beautiful chandelier, which is a fancy hanging light, was added in 1701.
Later Changes and TV Appearances
In the Victorian era (the 1800s), some parts of the church were repaired and updated. These changes mostly happened in the chancel, which is the area around the altar.
St Peter's Church has even been on television! It was used as a filming location for a TV show in 1973. The show was based on a mystery novel called The Nine Tailors by Dorothy L. Sayers. In the story, the church was called Fenchurch St Paul. The main character, Lord Peter Wimsey, was played by actor Ian Carmichael.
