History of St Peter's Church
Early Catholic Community in Winchester
After the English Reformation, Catholic communities faced challenges. However, there is proof that a Catholic group existed in Winchester. In 1575, Cardinal Allen noted that Winchester had enough Catholics to be a special 'district' in southern England.
From 1579 to 1583, church services were held in My Lady West's House. This building is now the Royal Hotel. Later, Roger Corham owned the house. He built a home for a priest, which was called St Peter's House. This house had a small chapel on its upper floor. By 1740, a separate chapel was built in the garden of the house.
John Milner and the First Chapel
In 1779, John Milner became the priest in Winchester. He later became a bishop. In 1784, he paid to make the chapel bigger. He then rebuilt the chapel in the Gothic revival style. His friend, John Carter, was the architect. This new chapel was officially opened on December 5, 1792.
This building still stands today and is called Milner Hall. It was fixed up in 1986 and now serves as the parish hall next to the main church.
Building the Current Church
Work on the current St Peter's Church began in 1924. Frederick Walters designed it. He was a well-known architect who designed many churches in southern England. The church cost £23,000 to build. A company called Hussellwhite of Basingstoke built it.
The church officially opened on July 15, 1926. Twelve years later, on September 22, 1938, the church was consecrated. This means it was formally dedicated for religious use.
Church Features and Updates
The beautiful stained glass windows in the main altar area and the south chapel were made by Burlison and Grylls. In the special area dedicated to Mary, called the lady chapel, the windows were designed by Arthur Edward Buss.
In 1968, a house for the priest, called a presbytery, was built next to the church. Later, in 1986, this presbytery became a community center for the church. A new home for the priest was built somewhere else.
Parish Community
St Peter's Church is part of a larger parish. This parish includes four other churches in nearby towns:
