History of St Peter's Church
Early Catholic Community
After the English Reformation, there was still a Catholic community in Winchester. Records from 1575 show that there were enough Catholics to form a special 'district' in southern England. People held Mass in a house on Fishmonger Street between 1579 and 1583. This building is now the Royal Hotel.
Later, Roger Corham owned the house. He built a home for a priest called St Peter's House. This house had a chapel above its ground floor. From 1740, a separate chapel was built in the garden of the residence.
John Milner and the Old Chapel
In 1779, John Milner became the priest in Winchester. He later became a bishop. In 1784, he paid to add an extension to the chapel. Later, he rebuilt the chapel in the Gothic revival style.
His friend, John Carter, was the architect for this project. The chapel was officially opened on December 5, 1792. This building still exists today. It is called Milner Hall and was restored in 1986. It now serves as the parish hall next to the church.
Building the Current Church
Building work for the current St Peter's Church began in 1924. Frederick Walters designed the church. He was a well-known architect who designed many churches in southern England.
The church cost £23,000 to build. The Hussellwhite of Basingstoke construction firm built it. St Peter's Church first opened its doors on July 15, 1926. Twelve years later, on September 22, 1938, the church was officially consecrated.
Church Improvements and Additions
The beautiful stained glass windows in the chancel and south chapel were made by Burlison and Grylls. In the lady chapel, the windows were designed by Arthur Edward Buss (1905–1999).
In 1968, a presbytery was built next to the church. A presbytery is a house where priests live. In 1986, this presbytery became a parish center. This happened when a new home for the priest was built somewhere else.
St Peter's Parish and Other Churches
St Peter's Church is part of a larger parish. A parish is a local church community. This parish includes four other churches in nearby towns:
