St Philip's Church is located in Hassall Green, Cheshire, England. It is a church that is still used today. It belongs to the Anglican faith. This church is part of a larger group of churches in the area. These include St John the Evangelist in Sandbach Heath and Christ Church in Wheelock. St Philip's Church is special because it is made from corrugated galvanised iron. This means it's a type of prefabricated building often called a "tin tabernacle."

History of St Philip's Church

Where Was the Church First Built?

The building that is now St Philip's Church was not always in Hassall Green. It was first built in the early 1880s in a town called Alsager.

How Did the Church Move to Hassall Green?

In 1894, a new, permanent church called St Mary Magdalene's Church, Alsager began to be built in Alsager. Because of this, the tin tabernacle was sold. It was bought for £150. The next year, in 1895, the church building was moved to its current home in Hassall Green.

What Does St Philip's Church Look Like?

The Unique Pink Color

The church is painted a bright pink color. It has white bargeboards, which are decorative wooden boards along the edges of the roof. Some people have described it as a "candyfloss-pink tin tabernacle" because of its unusual color.

Inside the Church

The church has a simple layout. It has a main area called a nave that is divided into three sections. There is also a shorter area at the front called a chancel, which is a bit lower than the nave. On the north side, there is a small room called a vestry.

Windows and Spire

Along the sides of the church, you can see windows with a special design called Y-tracery. The window at the very front of the church, in the chancel, has three tall, narrow windows that step up in height. On the front wall, above the entrance, there is a small tower for a bell, called a bellcote. This bellcote has a pointed roof, known as a broach spire, which is covered with slate.
