St Philip and St James Church in Whitton

St Philip and St James Church is a Church of England church located in Whitton, a part of London. It is a special place where people gather for worship and community events. The church is found on Hounslow Road in Whitton, which is in the area of Richmond-upon-Thames.

About the Church Building

The church building was constructed in 1862. This was when Whitton became its own separate church area, known as a parish, splitting from St Mary's, Twickenham.

How the Church Was Built

A family called the Gostlings owned some land that used to be part of the Duke of Argyll's large estate. They generously gave land at the corner of Hounslow and Kneller Roads. This land was used for the new church and a house for the vicar, which has since been replaced. The person who designed the church was an architect named F H Pownall.

Special Windows and Art

The church has beautiful stained glass windows. The windows on the east side were made in 1862 by artists called Clayton and Bell. The window on the west side was created later, in 1892, by Charles Eamer Kempe. Inside the church, you can also see a very old piece of art. It's a 15th-century alabaster panel, which is a carving made from a soft stone. This panel shows Christ and symbols related to his story, called Arma Christi. It was brought to the church in 1913 from Valle Crucis Abbey in Wales.

Church Services

Church services are gatherings where people worship and pray together. St Philip and St James Church holds services on weekdays at 9:30 AM. They also have services on Sunday mornings and evenings. The way they worship is described as Modern/Contemporary Catholic. This means it combines newer styles with some traditional Catholic practices.

The Vicar

The vicar is the main priest or minister who leads the church. The current vicar at St Philip and St James Church is Reverend Kate O'Sullivan. She is also a Franciscan Tertiary, which means she is part of a religious group called the Franciscans.
