History of St Stephen's Church

The story of St Stephen's church community began a long time ago. In 1720, a small chapel was first built on what is now Montpelier Road. This was the start of the church's journey.

Building the Church

The main church building you see today was finished in 1874. It was designed by architects T. M. Lockwood and T. H. Mawson. The church is considered a Grade II listed building. This means it's an important historical building that needs to be protected.

Later, more parts were added to the church. The chancel, which is the area around the altar, was built in 1885. The church tower was added even later, in 1907.
