A Look Back: The Story of St. Thomas' Church
St. Thomas' Church was built a long time ago, between 1890 and 1892. It was designed by a famous architect named Sir Reginald Blomfield. However, some official records say the architect was Sir Arthur Blomfield.
The church was built to remember a man named Thomas K. Hall. He was a vicar (a type of church leader) in a nearby village called Whatton. Sadly, he drowned in February 1890. This happened when a ship called RMS Quetta sank off the coast of Queensland, Australia. Thomas K. Hall's mother, Mrs. Sophia E. Hall, paid for the entire church to be built in his memory.
Special Windows and Bells
The church has some amazing stained-glass windows. On the north wall, there's a window called the "Quetta window." It shows the shipwreck where Thomas K. Hall lost his life. This window was designed by Michael Stokes in 2002.
The east window is also very special. It shows Jesus displaying his wounded hands to Doubting Thomas. This window is dedicated to Thomas Cranmer, a very important person in the history of the Church of England. Like many churches, St. Thomas' has a bell. It has one bell located in a small bell tower at the west end of the building.
