The Church of St Vincent is a very old church in a small village called Ashington, in Somerset, England. It was built way back in the 1200s, which makes it over 800 years old! This church is so special and important that it has been given a "Grade I listed building" status. This means it's one of the most important historic buildings in England and needs to be protected.

What Does St Vincent's Church Look Like?

This church is built from stone found nearby. It also uses a special type of stone called Hamstone for its decorative parts, which gives it a nice look. The roof is made of clay tiles.

The church is quite small. It has two main parts:

  • The nave: This is the main area where people sit during church services.
  • The chancel: This is the part of the church near the altar, usually where the choir sits.

The outside walls of the church have strong supports called buttresses. These stick out from the walls and help hold them up, making sure the old building stays strong. Later on, a bell tower was added to the western side of the church. This is where the church bells would have been kept.

Inside the Church

When you step inside the Church of St Vincent, you'll see furniture from the 1600s, a style known as Jacobean.

  • There are old-fashioned box pews. These are like individual wooden boxes or enclosures where families used to sit during services.
  • The pulpit (where the priest gives sermons) has a special roof-like cover called a tester. This was designed to help the priest's voice carry better in the church.
  • The baptismal font, which is used for baptisms, has eight sides.

The church is part of a group of churches in the area, including those in Chilton Cantelo, Mudford, Rimpton, and Marston Magna.
