Stage's Pond State Nature Preserve facts for kids
Stage's Pond State Nature Preserve is a special place in Ohio where nature is protected. It's a 178-acre nature preserve with several ponds. You can find it in Walnut Township, which is part of Pickaway County.
This nature preserve is located at 4792 Hagerty Road, just north of Circleville. It was officially opened and set aside to protect nature on August 23, 1974.
How the Pond Was Formed
The biggest pond at Stage's Pond is a cool example of something called a kettle lake. Imagine a giant sheet of ice, called a glacier, moving across the land a very long time ago. As the glacier melted, big chunks of ice sometimes broke off. If one of these ice chunks got buried in the ground and then melted, it left behind a bowl-shaped hole. This hole then filled with water, creating a kettle lake!
A Home for Birds
The ponds and the land around them are a very important habitat for many different animals. It's especially important for migratory birds. These are birds that fly long distances, sometimes thousands of miles, between their breeding grounds and their winter homes.
Stage's Pond is a perfect "rest stop" for these traveling birds. They can find food, water, and a safe place to rest before continuing their long journey. This makes the preserve a great spot for anyone interested in watching birds!
