Stanford M. Adelstein, born on August 19, 1931, is an American politician from South Dakota. He is a member of the Republican Party. He served in the state's government for many years. He was a member of the South Dakota House of Representatives from 2001 to 2005. Later, he served in the South Dakota Senate from 2005 to 2007 and again from 2008 to 2013.
Early Life and Education
Stan Adelstein was born in Sioux City, Iowa. He spent his childhood in Rapid City, South Dakota. He finished high school in Denver, Colorado. This allowed him to learn more about his Jewish background.
He went to the University of Colorado Boulder. There, he studied civil engineering and business. Civil engineering is about designing and building things like roads and bridges. After college, he served in the United States Army.
In 1957, he returned to Rapid City. His family started the Northwestern Engineering Company. Stan worked there and later took over the company. He also earned another degree in Business Administration from South Dakota School of Mines & Technology.
Political Career
Stan Adelstein began his political career in 2000. He was elected to the South Dakota House of Representatives. He served in the House for four years.
In 2005, he was elected to the South Dakota Senate. In 2006, he lost in the Republican primary election. He then supported the Democratic Party candidate, Tom Katus.
Adelstein won back his Senate seat in 2008. He ran against Tom Katus and another candidate. He ran without opposition for the South Dakota Senate in 2010 and 2012. In December 2013, Stan Adelstein resigned from the South Dakota Senate. He left due to health reasons.
Personal Life
Stan Adelstein has three sons. One of his sons is Jonathan Adelstein.
Stan Adelstein once tried to keep a famous dinosaur fossil in South Dakota. He offered $1.2 million to buy the bones of Sue. Sue is the largest Tyrannosaurus rex ever found. However, he was outbid at an auction in New York City. His efforts to buy Sue were shown in the documentary film Dinosaur 13.
