The Stanford Court Hotel is a famous hotel in San Francisco, California. It has 393 rooms and is located on Nob Hill. This area is known for its beautiful views and fancy buildings.

The hotel is right where California Street and Powell Street meet. This is a special spot because San Francisco's famous cable cars cross paths here.

A Look Back: The Hotel's History

From Mansion to Hotel: Early Days

A very rich man named Leland Stanford built a huge mansion on this spot in 1876. He was a railroad "tycoon," which means he owned and ran many railroads. He spent about $2 million on his home, which was a lot of money back then!

Stanford's mansion was known for being super luxurious. It had amazing art and fancy decorations. A tall wall made of stone surrounded his two-acre property. You can still see parts of this original wall and fence on the hotel's east side today.

Sadly, the beautiful Stanford mansion was destroyed. This happened during the big fire after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

Becoming the Stanford Court Apartments

After the mansion was gone, a real estate investor bought the land. His name was Lucien H. Sly. In 1912, he built the luxurious Stanford Court Apartments here.

These apartments quickly became one of the most fashionable places to live in San Francisco. Many important people lived there.

The Hotel We Know Today

In 1968, the apartment building was sold. It was completely changed and rebuilt to become a luxury hotel. The new hotel opened in March 1972 and was called The Stanford Court.

Over the years, the hotel changed owners and names a few times.

  • In 1988, it became the Stouffer Stanford Court Hotel.
  • Then, in 1993, it was called the Stouffer Renaissance Stanford Court Hotel.
  • By 1996, it was simply the Renaissance Stanford Court Hotel.

In 2008, the hotel got a big makeover that cost $35 million. In 2013, it became independent again and went back to its original name: the Stanford Court Hotel. Today, a company called Highgate Hotels manages it.
