About the Stanford Court Hotel

The Stanford Court Hotel is known for its great location and history. It offers a comfortable stay in one of San Francisco's most beautiful neighborhoods. The hotel has 8 floors and includes a restaurant called Aurea.

From Mansion to Modern Hotel: A Rich History

The land where the Stanford Court Hotel stands has a long and interesting past. It has been home to a grand mansion, fancy apartments, and finally, the luxury hotel we see today.

The Stanford Mansion (1876-1906)

Back in 1876, a very rich railroad builder named Leland Stanford built a huge mansion here. It cost a lot of money, about $2 million, which was a massive amount back then! His home was famous for being super luxurious and had an amazing art collection. The property was surrounded by a strong wall made of basalt and granite. You can still see parts of this original wall and a restored fence on the hotel's eastern side today. Sadly, this beautiful mansion was destroyed in the big fire that followed the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

Stanford Court Apartments (1912)

After the mansion was gone, a real estate investor bought the land. In 1912, the luxurious Stanford Court Apartments were built. These apartments quickly became one of the most fashionable places to live in San Francisco.

Becoming a Luxury Hotel (1972)

In 1968, the apartment building was sold. It was completely changed and rebuilt to become a luxury hotel. The new hotel, called The Stanford Court, opened its doors in March 1972. It quickly became a popular spot for travelers.

New Names and Updates

Over the years, the hotel changed owners and names a few times.

  • In 1988, it became the Stouffer Stanford Court Hotel.
  • Later, in 1993, it was renamed the Stouffer Renaissance Stanford Court Hotel.
  • By 1996, it was known as the Renaissance Stanford Court Hotel.

In November 2008, the hotel got a big update with a $35 million renovation. This made it even more modern and comfortable for guests. In 2013, the hotel became independent again and went back to its original name, the Stanford Court Hotel. Today, Highgate Hotels manages it.
