The Story of Stangate House

Stangate House was first planned a long time ago, between 1937 and 1939. A man named Rev. Samuel Raymond Baron Cornish, who was the first owner, made the plans while he was in London.

Building the House

In January 1940, an architect from Adelaide named Eric McMichael took Rev. Cornish's plans. He started building the house on January 18, 1940. Rev. Cornish and his wife, Gwyneth, worked together to create the beautiful garden at Stangate. They even changed the path of a creek so it would flow through their garden.

A Gift to the Future

Later, in the 1960s or 1970s, Gwyneth gave the property to the National Trust of South Australia. This organization helps to protect important places. Today, the Camellia Society of Adelaide Hills helps to take care of the garden, making sure it stays lovely for everyone to enjoy.
