The Staples train station is in Staples, Minnesota. It is a stop for Amtrak's Empire Builder train service. Amtrak is a passenger train company in the United States. The station was built in December 1909. It was originally built by the Northern Pacific Railway, a big railroad company from the past.
History of Staples Station
The Staples station was designed by Charles A. Reed and Allen H. Stem. These architects also designed other important train stations. For example, they designed King Street Station in Seattle, Washington. They also helped design the famous Grand Central Terminal in New York City.
Saving a Historic Building
In the mid-2000s, the city of Staples wanted to buy the station. It was mostly empty and needed repairs. The city worked with BNSF, another railway company, to buy it. The sale was completed in February 2008.
Now, the Staples Historical Society (SHS) owns and manages the station. This group works to preserve local history. They have already made important improvements. For example, they put on a new roof. They also fixed the old windows.
The SHS is looking for money to do more work. They want to fully restore the inside of the station. They also want to fix the heating and cooling systems. Their big goal is to use the second floor for the Staples Historical Society Museum. The local chamber of commerce already uses the ticket office area.
National Recognition
The Staples station is a very special building. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 13, 2008. This means it is recognized as an important historic site in the United States.
