The State Bank of North Carolina building is a really old and important place in Raleigh. It's the oldest building in Raleigh that was built for a business. It was also the very first bank built by the state of North Carolina!
The bank officially started in 1810. During the War of 1812, people worried the British Army might attack the coast. So, a lot of money was moved inland to banks in Raleigh and Tarboro. Because so much money came in, the State Bank building was built in 1813. Did you know that Jacob Johnson, who was the father of future President Andrew Johnson, once worked at this bank?
This historic building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. It is also a special Raleigh Historic Landmark. You can find it in the Capitol Area Historic District of Raleigh.
A Historic Building's Design
The State Bank building has a cool mix of old architectural styles. These are called Federal and Greek Revival. It's made of brick and has two-story porches on both the east and west sides. These porches are supported by tall columns.
What Happened to the Building?
For 60 years, the building was used as a bank. But in 1873, the Christ Episcopal Church bought it. They used it as a rectory, which is a home for a church leader.
Later, in 1968, the North Carolina National Bank bought the building. This bank is now part of Bank of America. They moved the building about 100 feet (30 meters) to make space. They needed the space for an addition to the Christ Church's main church building. The bank then used the old State Bank building as one of its downtown branches.
In 1976, the building was used for North Carolina's 200th birthday celebration. This is called a bicentennial. Today, the building is still being used as a bank! The State Employees Credit Union owns it now.
