The State Tower Building is a very tall building, also known as a skyscraper, located in Syracuse, New York. It was finished in 1928. This building is still the tallest building in Syracuse today.
It has 23 floors and stands about 95.4 meters (312 feet) high. The building was planned as a large office building. The first 10 floors are very wide. The floors above that are smaller and set back. This design allowed one business to use an entire floor. On the roof of the tenth floor, there used to be a restaurant that offered full service.
History of the State Tower
The State Tower Building is found at 201 East Genesee Street. It was built in 1928. The cost to build it was about $1.5 million. The building stands where the Bastable Theatre used to be.
The building is made from strong materials like steel and concrete. Its outside walls, called the facade, are covered with limestone, terra-cotta, and brick. The architects who designed it were Thompson & Churchill. The building was updated in 2003.
This building is a special place for peregrine falcons. These birds often build their nests here. In 2010, four baby falcons were born at the building. All four of them were males. In 2014, some parts of the building's outside walls needed to be checked for safety.
Hanover Square Historic District
The State Tower Building is an important part of the Hanover Square Historic District. A historic district is an area with many old buildings that are important to history. This district was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1976. This means it is a special place recognized by the government.
When the building first opened in 1928, Miss Martha LeRoy placed the first American flag at its very top.
