The Staten Island FerryHawks are a professional baseball team from Staten Island, New York City. They are part of the North Division of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. This league is a "partner league" of Major League Baseball. The FerryHawks play their home games at SIUH Community Park. This park is in the St. George area and looks out over the Manhattan skyline.

In 2021, the people of Staten Island helped choose the team's name. They picked "FerryHawks" in a special vote. The name honors the famous Staten Island Ferry. This ferry connects the borough to Manhattan across New York Harbor. The "Hawks" part refers to the red-tailed hawks and Cooper's hawks that live on Staten Island.

The FerryHawks' Story: How the Team Began

The 2020 baseball season faced delays because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was later canceled on June 30. On November 7, 2020, the New York Yankees announced a big change. They decided to end their connection with the Staten Island Yankees team. They also planned to bring an Atlantic League team to the stadium in 2021.

On December 3, 2020, the Staten Island Yankees team officially closed down.

A New Team for Staten Island Baseball Fans

In 2021, the New York Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) started talking with the Atlantic League. They wanted a new team to play at the stadium in 2022. On June 5, 2021, the Atlantic League President, Rick White, said that Staten Island was "close" to getting a new team.

On July 24, 2021, Staten Island Borough President James Oddo shared exciting news. A new group called Staten Island Entertainment LLC would own the team. This group included famous names like John Catsimatidis, Dany Garcia, Colin Jost, and Pete Davidson. On August 2, 2021, the Atlantic League officially approved this new ownership group.

Breaking Barriers: Kelsie Whitmore's Impact

On April 8, 2022, Kelsie Whitmore joined the Staten Island FerryHawks. She made history with the team. On April 22, she debuted as a pinch runner. Then, on May 1, she became the first woman to start an Atlantic League game. She played as a left fielder.

Whitmore continued to make history on May 4. She became the first woman to pitch in an Atlantic League game. She entered the game with the bases loaded and two outs. She got a former major league player, Ryan Jackson, to hit a fly out. This ended the inning and showed her skill.
