The Staten Island FerryHawks are a professional baseball team. They are based in Staten Island, a part of New York City. This team plays in the North Division of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. This league is a "partner league" of Major League Baseball.

The FerryHawks play their home games at SIUH Community Park. This park used to be the home of the Staten Island Yankees. It is located in the St. George neighborhood. From the park, you can see the Manhattan skyline across New York Harbor.

In 2021, fans helped choose the team's name, "FerryHawks." The name honors the famous Staten Island Ferry. This ferry connects Staten Island to Manhattan. It also refers to the red-tailed and Cooper's hawks. These birds live on Staten Island.

Team History

How the FerryHawks Started

The baseball season in 2020 was delayed. This was because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The season was later canceled on June 30, 2020.

On November 7, 2020, the New York Yankees made a big announcement. They said they would no longer have a team in Staten Island. The Staten Island Yankees team stopped playing on December 3, 2020.

After this, people started talking about a new team. The New York Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) worked with the Atlantic League. They wanted a new team to play at the stadium in 2022.

New Ownership and Approval

On July 24, 2021, it was announced that a new group would own the team. This group was called Staten Island Entertainment LLC. It included several investors. Some famous people were part of this group. These included Colin Jost and Pete Davidson.

On August 2, 2021, the Atlantic League approved this new ownership group. This meant the team could join the league. The stadium's lease was then given to Staten Island Entertainment. This happened on August 17, 2021.

Kelsie Whitmore's Historic Play

On April 8, 2022, Kelsie Whitmore signed with the Staten Island FerryHawks. She made history with the team. On April 22, she played as a pinch runner.

On May 1, she became the first woman to start an Atlantic League game. She played as a left fielder. She did not get any hits in her turns at bat. However, she caught two fly balls in the field.

On May 4, Whitmore made history again. She became the first woman to pitch in an Atlantic League game. She entered the game with the bases loaded. She got a former major league player out. This ended the inning.

Team Logos and Uniforms

The Staten Island FerryHawks logo shows a hawk. The hawk is copper-colored. It wears a baseball uniform, a cap, and holds a bat. The team's name, "Staten Island FerryHawks," is written above the hawk. It is in navy blue and orange.

The cap logo has the letters "SI" linked together. These letters are orange and sky blue. They have a navy blue outline.
