About the Statue
This impressive bronze statue stands over 4 meters (about 13 feet) tall. It was created by the artist Pablo Serrano. The sculptor said he was inspired by Indalecio Prieto's strong love for Spain. Prieto showed this love in a famous speech he gave in Cuenca in 1936.
Unveiling and Appearance
The statue was officially revealed in December 1984. Many important people attended the ceremony, including Enrique Barón, Joaquín Almunia, and Julián Campo. The statue shows Indalecio Prieto wearing a Basque-style beret. He appears to be holding a stack of books, reports, and newspapers under his arm.
Location and Changes
When it was first put up, the statue of Indalecio Prieto was placed very close to another statue. This other statue was an equestrian statue of Francisco Franco. Prieto and Franco were on opposite sides during the Spanish Civil War.
In 2005, the statue of Franco was removed. After this, the Prieto statue was marked with paint. Later that same year, in July 2005, it was marked again with pink paint.
