Stawamus is a small village located in British Columbia, Canada. It sits at the very end of Howe Sound, which is a beautiful ocean inlet. The village is right where the Stawamus River meets the water, about 1 kilometer south of a town called Squamish, British Columbia.
This special village is built on a piece of land known as Stawamus Indian Reserve No. 24. It is home to the Squamish people, who are Indigenous people who have lived in this area for a very long time. The Squamish Nation, which is the government for the Squamish people, has offices here. Stawamus is also an important place for the Squamish Nation, providing services like education and health care for people living in the Upper Squamish region.
How Many People Live in Stawamus?
In 2011, a survey called the Census of Canada counted the people living in the Stawamus Indian Reserve. It found that about 95 people lived there. Most of these people were Indigenous, but a small number (around 10) were not Indigenous and had family roots from the British Isles.
