About the Pine Barren Deathcamas
This plant is sometimes seen as a separate species from Stenanthium densum. Other times, scientists think it is the same species.
Plant Family and Names
S. leimanthoides belongs to the plant family called Melanthiaceae. Within this family, it is part of a smaller group known as the Melanthieae tribe.
Scientists often study plants using their DNA. These studies have changed how plants in this tribe are grouped. Many plants have been moved to different genera (plant groups). For example, S. leimanthoides was once called Zigadenus leimanthoides. You might still find this old name in older books about plants.
Where It Grows
This plant is found in the southern United States. It grows more inland than its close relative, S. densum. You can mostly find it in the Appalachian Mountains.
Safety for Animals
The pine barren deathcamas can be dangerous for farm animals. If livestock, like cows or sheep, eat this plant, it can make them sick. This is especially true for animals in the western parts of the United States.
