About the Narrowleaf Stenogyne
The narrowleaf stenogyne is a trailing vine. This means it grows along the ground or climbs on other plants. Its flowers can be magenta (a bright purplish-red) or yellow. They are also a bit hairy.
The leaves of this plant have tiny teeth along their edges. After the flowers, the plant grows fruit. These fruits are roundish and have a purple-black color.
Where Does It Live?
This special plant grows in forests and shrublands. It likes to grow on lava rock. You can find it on the island of Hawaii. Most of these plants live inside the Pohakuloa Training Area.
Why is it Special?
The narrowleaf stenogyne is an endemic plant. This means it naturally lives only in Hawaii and nowhere else in the world. It is also a very rare plant.
In 1979, the United States government listed it as an endangered species. This means it is in danger of disappearing forever. Even though scientists used to divide this plant into different types, they now see it as one single species. It still has its endangered status today.
What Threats Does It Face?
The narrowleaf stenogyne faces several dangers. Fire is a big threat to its habitat. Feral pigs and other grazing animals can also harm the plants. These animals are called ungulates.
Another problem comes from introduced species of plants. These are plants that were brought to Hawaii by people. They can grow very fast and take over the space where the narrowleaf stenogyne lives.
