Stephan "Steff" Eberharter (born March 24, 1969) is a famous former alpine ski racer from Austria. He competed in the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup, which is a series of top-level ski races.

Stephan Eberharter's Early Life and Career Start

Stephan Eberharter was born in Brixlegg, a town in Tyrol, Austria. He started his journey in the World Cup during the 1990 season when he was 20 years old. He quickly showed his talent in the sport.

The very next year, in 1991, he achieved great success. He finished second in the super-G standings. He also won two gold medals at the 1991 World Championships in Saalbach. These gold medals were for the super-G and combined events. Because of his amazing performance, he was named the Austrian Sportspersonality of the year for 1991.

Becoming a World Champion Skier

After some injuries, Stephan became especially good at the downhill event. He was a strong competitor in the late 1990s and early 2000s, often battling with his fellow Austrian skier, Hermann Maier.

In 2001, he was the runner-up in the downhill standings. A big moment came when Hermann Maier had a serious motorcycle accident in August 2001. This meant Maier could not compete in the 2002 season. With Maier out, Eberharter stepped up.

He went on to win the overall World Cup title in both 2002 and 2003. He also won the season titles for downhill and super-G in those years. This showed he was one of the best skiers in the world.

Memorable Race Victories

Stephan Eberharter had many impressive wins during his career. One of his most famous victories was at the Hahnenkamm downhill race in Kitzbühel in 2004. He won by a huge margin of 1.21 seconds over the second-place skier, Daron Rahlves. This was a very large difference in a downhill race, showing his incredible skill.

He won a total of 29 World Cup races. These wins included 18 in downhill, 6 in super-G, and 5 in giant slalom. He also reached the podium (finished in the top three) 75 times in his career.
