Early Life and Education
Stephen Sauvestre was born in Bonnétable, France, in 1847. His father, Charles Sauvestre, was a writer and teacher. Stephen went to a special architecture school called the École Spéciale d'Architecture. He graduated with top honors in 1868.
Designing the Eiffel Tower

Stephen Sauvestre played a key role in the design of the Eiffel Tower. He added many important features that make the tower look the way it does today.
He designed the decorative arches at the bottom of the tower. He also added a glass building on the first level. Sauvestre was also responsible for the cupola (a small dome-like structure) at the very top. He even helped choose the tower's color!
Gustave Eiffel, the engineer behind the tower, supported Sauvestre's ideas. Eiffel bought the rights to the tower's design. Sauvestre had filed this design patent with two other engineers, Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier.
Sauvestre was also the head of the architecture department at Gustave Eiffel's company, Compagnie des Etablissements Eiffel.
