Stephens Island (British Columbia) facts for kids
Stephens Island is a beautiful island located off the coast of British Columbia, Canada. It sits in a body of water called Hecate Strait. You can find it northwest of Porcher Island and southwest of the city of Prince Rupert.
The island has two main high points. One is Mount Stephens, which is 432 meters (about 1,417 feet) tall. It's on the southeast side of the island. Another is Congreve Hill, which is 150 meters (about 492 feet) tall, located to the northwest of Mount Stephens.
The island was named by Captain George Vancouver. He was a famous British explorer. He named it to honor Sir Philip Stephens. Sir Philip was an important government official. He worked as the secretary to the Admiralty from 1763 to 1795.

Indigenous Lands on Stephens Island
Stephens Island is home to important lands for Indigenous peoples. These areas are called Indian Reserves. They are managed by the First Nations communities.
Squadaree Indian Reserve
Squadaree Indian Reserve No. 9 is on the west side of the island's northern part. It is located on Skiakl Bay. There's also a small island nearby called Skiakl Island.
Avery Island Indian Reserve
Just off the northern tip of Stephens Island is Avery Island. The entire Avery Island is also an Indian Reserve, known as Avery Island Indian Reserve No. 92. Both Squadaree and Avery Island reserves are managed by the Metlakatla First Nation. This area is near Qlawdzeet Anchorage. Overlooking this anchorage from the south is Qlawd Hill, at the very northern tip of Stephens Island.
Other Islands Nearby
Stephens Island is surrounded by several smaller islands. These include Dunn Island, Dolly Island, Joyce Island, Log Island, Minnie Island, Philip Island (which used to be called Parry Island), Rod Island, and Trunk Island.
The largest of these smaller islands is Prescott Island. It lies to the southeast of Stephens Island. Prescott Island is located between Stephens Island and Porcher Island.
