Sterling Simms' Musical Journey
Sterling Simms started making music very early. He recorded his first song with his grandfather when he was just six years old. His grandfather, who was also a musician, showed him the music of Sam Cooke.
When Sterling was 15, his family moved to Atlanta. Atlanta is a big music city. There, Sterling met famous music producers like Dallas Austin and Jermaine Dupri.
Becoming a Songwriter
After a time, Sterling decided to focus on writing songs for other artists. He put his dream of being a performer on hold. He went back to Philadelphia and met up with Kenny Gamble, a well-known music figure.
Later, back in Atlanta, Sterling met producer Teddy Bishop. Teddy really liked the songs Sterling was writing. He asked, "Who is singing these songs?" Teddy encouraged Sterling to start performing again.
Signing a Record Deal
Sterling sang for important music executives like Lyor Cohen and Kevin Liles. He sang Sam Cooke's "A Long Time Coming." They were very impressed with his talent. Many record labels wanted to sign him.
While waiting for an offer, Sterling went to Miami with Teddy Bishop. There, Bishop played Sterling's music for George Robinson, an experienced person in the music industry. Robinson immediately saw Sterling's talent. He convinced his partners at One Recordings to sign Sterling as their first artist.
Sterling signed with One Recordings. He started working hard to finish his album. Soon after, a meeting was set up with L.A. Reid at Island/Def Jam. Two months later, One Recordings made a deal with Island/Def Jam. They agreed to release Sterling Simms' music together.
Musical Inspirations
Sterling has many musical influences. He looks up to groups like Boyz II Men and New Edition. He also admires singers such as Aaliyah, Sade, Brian McKnight, Mario, and Usher. He also enjoys Latin music.
In 2009, Sterling helped write a song called "Robot Love." This song was on Allison Iraheta's first album, "Just Like You."
In early 2011, Sterling signed a new record deal with RCA Records. He is currently working on his second album.
