What Does the Stetson Union Church Look Like?
The Stetson Union Church is located in a quiet spot. It's on the northeast corner where Village Road (Maine State Route 222) meets Wolfboro Road. The church is a single-story building made of wood. It faces mostly west, towards the road crossing.
Church Tower and Entrance
A tall, square tower rises from the front part of the roof. This tower has two main sections. The very top of the tower has a pointy, cone-shaped spire. The upper part of the tower has windows that are shaped like arches. These windows have decorative columns next to them.
The main front of the church has a special entrance area that is set back a bit. This entrance has columns at the front and decorative flat columns at the back. The sides of the church building have four beautiful stained-glass windows. A chimney is located at the back of the building.
History of the Stetson Union Church
The town of Stetson has an interesting history. It started in 1801 when a man named Amasa Stetson bought the land. He bought it from a school called Leicester Academy in Leicester, Massachusetts.
How the Church Was Built
In 1831, Amasa Stetson decided to leave money in his will to build a church. This gift led to the building of the Stetson Union Church in 1843. As mentioned, the design was created by the well-known architect Benjamin S. Deane. He was famous for his work in the Bangor area. Today, the town of Stetson is the owner of this historic and important building.
