The Stetson Union Church, also called the Stetson Meetinghouse, is a very old and important church building. You can find it on Maine State Route 222 in Stetson, Maine. It was built in 1843. A famous architect from Bangor, named Benjamin S. Deane, designed it.

This church is a great example of a building made in the Greek Revival style. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. This means it's a special place worth protecting. The town of Stetson now owns the building.

What Does the Church Look Like?

The Stetson Union Church is located at the corner of Village Road (Maine State Route 222) and Wolfboro Road. It is just east of the main part of the village. The building is made of wood and has one story. It is shaped like a rectangle and faces west.

Special Features of the Building

A tall, square tower rises from the church's roof. This tower has two parts. It ends with a pointy, cone-shaped spire that has grooves, like a fancy column. The top part of the tower has arched windows. These windows are decorated with Doric pilasters, which are like flat columns.

The front of the church has a special entrance area that is set back from the main wall. This area has Doric columns at the front. It also has Ionic pilasters at the back. The sides of the church have four beautiful stained-glass windows. A chimney is located at the back of the building.

History of the Stetson Union Church

The town of Stetson began in 1801. A man named Amasa Stetson bought the land and started the community. In 1831, he left money in his will to build a church. This money helped make the Stetson Union Church possible.

Who Designed the Church?

The church was built in 1843. It was designed by Benjamin S. Deane, a well-known architect from Bangor. His design created the beautiful Greek Revival style building we see today. The town of Stetson has owned the church building for many years.
