Samuel “Steve” Broidy (June 14, 1905 – April 28, 1991) was an important American leader in the movie business. He helped create and distribute many films.

Early Life and Education

Steve Broidy was born on June 14, 1905, in Malden, Massachusetts. He went to Boston University for college. However, he had to leave school early. This was because of a very difficult economic time called the Great Depression.

Career in Movies

Steve Broidy started working in the film industry in 1926. His first job was as a salesman for Universal Studios. In 1931, he began working for Warner Bros. Studios.

Joining Monogram Pictures

In 1933, Broidy joined Monogram Pictures. He started as the sales manager in Boston. He quickly moved up in the company. By 1940, he was elected to the board of directors. He also became the vice president and general sales manager.

Leading Allied Artists

In 1945, Steve Broidy took charge of operations at Monogram Pictures. Later that year, he became the president of the company. In 1946, Broidy started a new company called Allied Artists Productions. Monogram Pictures later changed its name to Allied Artists in 1953.

He remained president of Allied Artists until 1965. After that, he left to start his own company, Motion Pictures International. As an independent producer, Broidy helped make several movies. These included Good Times (1967), The Fox (1967), and 80 Steps to Jonah (1969). He also helped produce the famous movie The Poseidon Adventure in 1972, though he was not officially credited.

Giving Back to the Community

Steve Broidy was also known for his kindness and for giving back. This is called philanthropy. In 1962, he received a special award. It was the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This award honors people in the film industry who do a lot of humanitarian work.

He was also a founding leader for the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Broidy served on the board of governors for the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) from 1960 to 1969. He was also their Second Vice President for a time.

Family Life

Steve Broidy had two sons, Arthur and Steven Broidy. He also had a daughter named Eleanor Sattinger.

Death

Steve Broidy passed away in 1991 in Los Angeles, California. He was 85 years old and died after a heart attack.
