Steve Collins' Ski Jumping Journey
Steve Collins started his professional ski jumping career in the World Cup series on December 27, 1979. His first big event was in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, where he finished 10th on the Large Hill. Just three days later, he competed in Oberstdorf, Germany.
In 1980, Steve achieved a major victory. He won the FIS Junior World Ski Championships in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden. This was a big moment for the young athlete. Also in 1979, he received the national Tom Longboat Award. This award celebrates Indigenous athletes for their amazing contributions to sports in Canada.
Steve once held a record for the longest jump on a 90-meter hill. He jumped 128.5 meters at Big Thunder in his hometown of Thunder Bay on December 15, 1980. Steve, along with his teammate Horst Bulau, helped Canada get great results in ski jumping. This sport was usually dominated by European athletes.
Steve left the World Cup circuit in 1988. However, he returned to compete at his home hill in Thunder Bay in 1990. His final World Cup appearance was on February 12, 1991.
