Tom Longboat Awards facts for kids
The Tom Longboat Awards celebrate amazing Indigenous athletes in Canada. These awards started in 1951. They honor athletes for their great achievements in sports. Each year, the awards continue to recognize top Indigenous athletes across the country.
The Aboriginal Sport Circle runs the Tom Longboat Awards program. This program helps to celebrate top male and female athletes. They are recognized at both local (regional) and national levels.
Each province and territory has an Aboriginal sport group. These groups can choose one male and one female Indigenous athlete from their area. These regional winners are then considered for the national award. The national awards are given to the top male and female athletes. This happens at a special event hosted by Canada's Sports Hall of Fame.
Regional winners receive a Tom Longboat Award medallion. The two national winners get special rings. Their names are also added to the Tom Longboat Award Trophy. This trophy is proudly displayed in Canada's Sports Hall of Fame.

History of the Awards
The Tom Longboat Awards are named after a famous athlete, Tom Longboat. He was a member of the Onondaga Nation. Tom Longboat was from Six Nations of the Grand River. In the early 1900s, he became well-known as a long-distance runner. He competed in races all over North America and Europe.
In 1999, Maclean's magazine called him Canada's greatest sports legend of the 20th century. The Tom Longboat Award has been given since 1951. It honors the best Indigenous male and female amateur athletes in Canada.
The awards began in 1951. They were a team effort between the Department of Indian Affairs and the Amateur Athletic Union of Canada (AAUC). Since 1998, the Aboriginal Sport Circle has managed the awards. This group supports Indigenous sport and recreation in Canada.
What the Awards Stand For
The Tom Longboat Award recognizes Indigenous athletes. It celebrates their big achievements in sports. Winners also show a strong commitment to good sportsmanship. They play fair and show respect. They also live a balanced lifestyle as an Indigenous athlete.
Who Can Be Nominated
The Tom Longboat Award honors athletes for their accomplishments. These achievements must happen within a specific year (September 1 to August 31). To be nominated, athletes must meet certain requirements:
- They must be of Indigenous background (First Nations, Inuit, or Métis).
- They must have been active in sports during the nomination year.
- They must show good sportsmanship, fair play, and strong ethics in their sport.
- They must complete a nomination form. This form needs to be sent to their provincial or territorial sport body by the deadline.
