Steve Oedekerk's Early Life

Steve Oedekerk's Career in Film and TV

Throughout his career, Steve Oedekerk has worked on many TV shows. He created special programs for channels like NBC, ABC, and UPN. He also wrote for FOX in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

During this time, Oedekerk became friends with Jim Carrey. They worked together on the TV show In Living Color from 1990 to 1994. This was the start of many projects they would do together.

Early Films and Working with Jim Carrey

Before his work on In Living Color, Oedekerk wrote and starred in his first film, Smart Alex (1987). In 1991, he wrote and acted in the movie High Strung. Jim Carrey also appeared in this film, but he was not credited.

Soon after, Oedekerk worked with Carrey again. He was a consultant for Tom Shadyac's first movie, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994). This movie became a big hit. Because of its success, Oedekerk got the chance to direct and write the sequel.

Directing and Writing Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls

The sequel, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995), was directed and written by Oedekerk. It earned even more money than the first movie. Even though it was very successful, Oedekerk and Carrey decided to work on other projects. However, they remained good friends.

Later Film Projects

After the Ace Ventura movies, Oedekerk helped write The Nutty Professor (1996). This film was directed by Shadyac and became one of the biggest movies that year.

Oedekerk then wrote, directed, and had a small role in Nothing to Lose (1997). This movie starred Tim Robbins and Martin Lawrence. He took a break from directing big movies for a while but kept writing screenplays.

Some of the screenplays he wrote include:

  • Patch Adams (1998)
  • Nutty Professor II: The Klumps (2000)
  • Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (2001)
  • Kung Pow! Enter the Fist (2002) – he also directed, wrote, and starred in this one.
  • Bruce Almighty (2003)
  • Barnyard (2006) – he directed, wrote, produced, and voiced characters in this film.

In 2007, Oedekerk wrote the story for Evan Almighty, which was a sequel to Bruce Almighty. He was also asked to write a movie based on Ripley's Believe It or Not!, with Jim Carrey set to star. There hasn't been much news about that project since.

In 2009, Universal Pictures announced that Steve Oedekerk would write a movie about the Stretch Armstrong superhero doll. As of 2016, that movie has not been made, but an animated TV show is in the works. In 2015, it was announced that a sequel to Kung Pow is being planned, with Oedekerk returning to write and direct.
