Career in Movies and TV
Working with Jim Carrey
Steve Oedekerk's career took off when he began working with other comedians. In the early 1990s, he became good friends with Jim Carrey while working on the TV show In Living Color. This was the start of a long and successful partnership.
Oedekerk worked as a consultant on Carrey's breakout movie, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994). The movie was a huge hit. Oedekerk then directed and wrote the sequel, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995), which was even more successful at the box office.
The two friends continued to work together. Oedekerk co-wrote the screenplay for The Nutty Professor (1996), which was a massive success. He also helped write the story for Bruce Almighty (2003) and its sequel, Evan Almighty (2007).
Directing and Writing
Besides his work with Jim Carrey, Oedekerk has written and directed his own movies. In 1997, he directed Nothing to Lose, starring Tim Robbins and Martin Lawrence.
One of his most famous projects is Kung Pow! Enter the Fist (2002). Oedekerk not only wrote and directed the film, but he also starred as the main character, "The Chosen One." He used an old martial arts movie and digitally inserted himself into the scenes, creating a unique and silly comedy.
He also wrote or helped write the screenplays for many other films, including:
- Patch Adams (1998)
- Nutty Professor II: The Klumps (2000)
- Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (2001)
- Barnyard (2006)
- Cowboys & Aliens (2011)

The success of Barnyard led to a Nickelodeon TV series called Back at the Barnyard, which ran from 2007 to 2011. The studio also created the show Planet Sheen, a spin-off of the Jimmy Neutron series.
