Barnyard (also known as Barnyard: The Original Party Animals) is a fun computer-animated comedy film from 2006. It was made in both Germany and the United States. Paramount Pictures helped share the movie, and Nickelodeon Movies was one of the companies that produced it.

The film was directed by Steve Oedekerk, who also wrote the story. It features the voices of famous actors like Kevin James, Courteney Cox, and Sam Elliott. Barnyard was released on August 4, 2006. It earned over $116 million around the world. This movie was so popular that it led to a TV show called Back at the Barnyard. The TV show ran for two seasons from 2007 to 2011.

The Story of Barnyard

The movie is about a cow named Otis who loves to have fun and play pranks. His father, Ben, is the wise leader of the barnyard animals when the farmer is away. Ben tries to teach Otis to be more responsible, but Otis prefers to hang out with his friends. His friends include Pip the mouse, Pig the pig, Freddy the ferret, and Peck the chicken.

One day, Otis meets a new cow named Daisy, who is expecting a baby. That night, the animals throw a big party in the barn. Ben is on guard duty, and Otis is supposed to help him. Ben gives Otis permission to go to the party, telling him about the night he found Otis as a baby, when the stars seemed to dance.

Later, Ben has to fight a group of coyotes led by Dag. The coyotes are trying to steal chickens from the coop. Ben bravely fights them off, but he is badly hurt. He manages to save the chickens, but then he collapses. Otis rushes to his father, but sadly, Ben dies.

After Ben's death, the animals choose Otis to be their new leader. Otis struggles with his new duties and often leaves Freddy and Peck in charge. One day, he overhears the coyotes chasing a hare. Otis tries to fight Dag, but Dag is too clever. Dag makes a deal: he will take some animals, but if Otis tries to stop him, he will kill everyone. Otis feels defeated and decides to leave the barnyard.

The next morning, before Otis can leave, he finds out that Dag and his coyotes have already taken some hens and a chick. Otis realizes he was tricked and goes to rescue them. He confronts the coyotes, but they are too strong for him alone. Luckily, his friends Pip, Pig, Freddy, Peck, and Miles the Mule arrive to help. The gophers and Jersey Cows also join the fight. Otis defeats Dag and tells him to never come back.

Otis and his friends return to the barnyard as heroes. Daisy gives birth to her calf, and she names him Ben, after Otis's father. Duke, the farmer's sheepdog, asks Otis to stay and be their leader. Otis agrees, and everyone cheers. As he walks outside, he sees the stars dancing again, just like his father described.

Who's Who in Barnyard

Meet the Characters

  • Otis (Kevin James) is a carefree bull who loves to play pranks and party. He is Ben's adopted son. After Ben's death, Otis becomes the leader of the barnyard, even though he doesn't want the responsibility at first. He is the main character and likes Daisy.
  • Dag (David Koechner) is a red coyote and the main bad guy in the movie. He and his coyote friends kill Ben and try to trick Otis. Otis eventually defeats him at the end of the film.
  • Ben (Sam Elliott) is a wise bull and the leader of the barnyard. He tries to teach Otis to grow up and be responsible. Ben is killed by the coyotes early in the movie. He plays a handmade guitar and sings part of "I Won't Back Down."
  • Daisy (Courteney Cox) is a pregnant cow who moves to the barnyard. She is Otis's love interest. At the end of the movie, she gives birth to a calf and names him Ben, after Otis's father.
  • Miles (Danny Glover) is a strong mule who lives in the barnyard. He helps Otis and his friends fight off the coyote pack.
  • Bessie (Wanda Sykes) is a cow who acts as a protector for Daisy. At first, she doesn't like Otis because of his playful behavior. However, she learns to like him by the end of the movie.
  • The Jersey Cows (S. Scott Bullock, John DiMaggio and Maurice LaMarche) are a group of three bulls named Eddy, Bud, and Igg. They enjoy having fun, driving the farmer's truck, and partying, much like Otis at the start of the movie.
  • Pip (Jeff Garcia) is a clever mouse and Otis's best friend. He is always there to help Otis in the movie and the TV series.
  • Pig (Tino Insana) is a pig who loves to eat all the time. He is another close friend of Otis.
  • Duke (Dom Irrera) is the farmer's sheepdog who guards the sheep. He briefly takes charge of the farm when Otis decides to leave.
  • Freddy (Cam Clarke) is a ferret who tries very hard not to eat chickens, even though it's natural for his species. He works to be a good part of the farm.
  • Peck (Rob Paulsen) is a rooster and Freddy's best friend. He often worries about Freddy. Peck learns to crow properly by the end of the movie.
  • Etta (Andie MacDowell) is a hen who cares for all the chicks on the farm. She and her babies are captured by the coyotes, and Otis has to rescue them.
  • Maddy (Madeline Lovejoy) is one of Etta's chicks. She looks up to Otis like a big brother.
  • The Farmer (Fred Tatasciore) runs the barnyard where the animals live. When he leaves, the animals are free to do whatever they want.
  • Eugene Beady (Steve Oedekerk) is a child who likes to cause trouble by "cow tipping" (pushing over cows). Otis and the Jersey Cows get revenge on him with a game called "boy tipping."
  • Mr. and Mrs. Beady (Steve Oedekerk and Maria Bamford) are a married couple who live near the barnyard. Mrs. Beady is a very curious woman who suspects the animals can talk and act like humans. Her husband usually doesn't pay attention to her ideas.
  • The Pizza Twins (Steve Oedekerk and Rob Paulsen) are two teenage pizza delivery boys. They are not very smart and are easily amused, even when they see the animals acting like humans.
  • Wild Mike (Rob Paulsen) is a mysterious animal kept in a crate. He is only let out for parties because he dances wildly. He helps fight the coyotes.
  • Everett (Lloyd Sherr) is an elderly dog who is 13 years old in the movie. He can play the banjo.
