Steven Adler (born Michael Coletti; January 22, 1965) is an American musician. He is best known as the drummer and a songwriter for the hard rock band Guns N' Roses. With Guns N' Roses, he became famous around the world in the late 1980s.

After leaving Guns N' Roses, Steven Adler continued his musical journey. In the 2000s, he was the drummer for the band Adler's Appetite. From 2012, he also played drums for the band Adler. He later decided to stop performing with the band Adler in early 2017.

Steven Adler also appeared on TV shows like Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew and its spin-off Sober House. In 2012, he was honored by being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Guns N' Roses.

Life and Music Career

Early Life and Starting Music (1965–1984)

Steven Adler was born Michael Coletti in Cleveland, Ohio. His mother later changed his name to Steven Adler after marrying Melvin Adler, who adopted him. Steven grew up in the San Fernando Valley in California. When he was 13, he moved to Hollywood to live with his grandparents.

At Bancroft Junior High, Steven became friends with Saul Hudson, who is now known as Slash. They met when Steven had a skateboarding accident, and Slash stopped to help him. Steven later returned to his parents' house for high school, where he learned to play the drums.

In 1983, Steven Adler returned to Hollywood. He tried out for a band called London but didn't get in. After that, he formed a band called Road Crew with his friend Slash. They named the band after a Motörhead song. They looked for a bassist and found Duff McKagan. They worked on music, including a riff that would become part of the Guns N' Roses song "Rocket Queen." Slash later ended the band because they couldn't find a good singer. Steven then briefly joined a local band called Hollywood Rose, which included singer Axl Rose and guitarist Izzy Stradlin.

Joining Guns N' Roses (1985–1990)

In June 1985, Steven Adler joined a new band called Guns N' Roses. The band was started by Axl Rose, Izzy Stradlin, and members from L.A. Guns. When the original drummer left, Steven and Slash joined their old Road Crew bandmate Duff McKagan to complete the band.

Guns N' Roses played in famous nightclubs like the Whisky a Go Go and The Roxy. They also opened for bigger bands in 1985 and 1986. After being noticed by several big record companies, the band signed with Geffen Records in March 1986.

In July 1987, Guns N' Roses released their first album, Appetite for Destruction. This album became a huge success, selling over 30 million copies worldwide. It is still the best-selling first album of all time in the United States. In November 1988, the band released G N' R Lies, which also sold millions of copies.

Steven Adler faced some challenges during this time. He was not able to perform at the American Music Awards in January 1989, and Don Henley filled in for him. Steven briefly left the band in early 1990 but later returned. However, when the band went to record the song "Civil War", Steven had difficulties playing. He tried to play the song many times, and the drum track had to be carefully edited. Due to ongoing difficulties, Steven Adler officially left Guns N' Roses on July 11, 1990. His last show with the band was on April 7 at Farm Aid IV.

Izzy Stradlin, who also left the band later, said that changing drummers affected the band's sound. He felt that Steven's unique drumming style gave the songs their special feel.

After Guns N' Roses (1990–2002)

After leaving Guns N' Roses, Steven Adler tried out for the band AC/DC. However, he claims that AC/DC's manager changed their mind after Axl Rose announced Steven's departure onstage at the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards in September 1990.

Instead, Steven reformed his band Road Crew with new members. They recorded an album and got attention from a major record label, but the band soon broke up. Steven then took a break from music for a while. He later said it was a very difficult time for him.

In July 1991, Steven Adler filed a lawsuit against his former Guns N' Roses bandmates. He said that the contract he signed took away his financial share in the band. The case was settled in 1993. Steven received a payment and was given 15% of the money from the songs he recorded before he left the band.

In 1996, Steven had a health issue that affected the left side of his face and made it hard to speak clearly for a time.

In June 1998, Steven joined the band BulletBoys. They recorded an album and planned a tour across the US.

Adler's Appetite and TV Appearances (2003–2011)

In 2003, Steven Adler formed a new band called Suki Jones, which was later renamed Adler's Appetite. The band included singer Jizzy Pearl and other musicians. With different members joining and leaving, the band toured the US and Europe in 2003 and 2004. They mostly played songs from Guns N' Roses' Appetite for Destruction album, as well as songs by Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, and Queen.

In September 2003, Adler's Appetite played a show in Hollywood. Steven's former Guns N' Roses bandmates, Slash and Izzy Stradlin, joined them on stage for some songs.

In January 2005, Adler's Appetite released a short album (EP) with four original songs and two cover songs. They then toured the US, Europe, Japan, and Argentina. They planned to release a full album later that year, but it didn't happen. In July 2007, the band played another show where Izzy Stradlin and Duff McKagan from Guns N' Roses joined them. Slash was there too but didn't play, as he didn't want to suggest a Guns N' Roses reunion.

In 2008, Steven Adler appeared on the TV show Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew. He also appeared on its spin-off show Sober House.

In 2010, Steven worked with his former Guns N' Roses bandmate Slash on Slash's first solo album. Steven played drums on the song "Baby Can't Drive." Later that year, Adler's Appetite released new songs called "Alive," "Stardog," and "Fading." In 2011, Steven appeared on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew again.

New Band Adler and Guest Appearances (2011–2016)

In 2011, Steven Adler formed a new band simply called Adler. The band included guitarist Lonny Paul, singer-guitarist Jacob Bunton, and bassist Johnny Martin. Steven said he was very excited about the music they were making, feeling it was like the excitement he had with Guns N' Roses.

The band recorded their first album, Back from the Dead, in Los Angeles. The album featured guest appearances from Slash and John 5. It was released on November 26, 2012.

On April 14, 2012, Steven Adler was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Guns N' Roses. He performed at the ceremony with Slash, Duff McKagan, and Matt Sorum, along with other musicians. Steven said being inducted was "an honor and a dream come true."

In late 2012, the band Adler performed on the Kiss Kruise, which was their first live show. The next year, Adler's planned US tour was postponed because Steven needed to focus on his well-being.

On July 6, 2016, Steven Adler joined Guns N' Roses on stage during their "Not in This Lifetime..." tour in Cincinnati, Ohio. He played "Out Ta Get Me" and "My Michelle." This was his first time performing with the band since 1990. He also made other guest appearances with Guns N' Roses in cities like Nashville, Los Angeles, and Buenos Aires.

Adler's Appetite Returns (2017–Present)

In 2018, guitarist Alex Grossi announced that Adler's Appetite would return to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Appetite for Destruction album.
