Stewartstown is a small, unincorporated community located in Monongalia County, West Virginia, United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place with a shared identity but without its own local government.

Discovering Stewartstown

Stewartstown is nestled close to the Cheat River. You can find it just off US-119, right on a bend in the river. This makes it a scenic spot, surrounded by nature.

A Look Back in Time

Stewartstown has a rich history that dates back to the 1700s. It was first settled in 1771 by William Stewart and his wife, Elizabeth Givens Stewart. They were among the early pioneers in this area.

The community is part of a region in Monongalia County known as "The Forks of Cheat." This name comes from the fact that the Cheat River flows into the Monongahela River here, creating a "fork" where the two rivers meet.

In 1775, a very important event happened in Stewartstown. Reverend John Corbly helped start the Forks-of-the-Cheat Baptist Church. This church is special because it's the oldest church in West Virginia that has been operating continuously since it was founded. That means it has been open and serving its community for over 245 years!
