A Look at Stewiacke's Past
The name Stewiacke comes from the Mi'kmaq First Nations people. It means "flowing out in small streams" or "winding river." It can also mean "whimpering or whining as it goes."
During the French and Indian War, the British built Fort Ellis here. This fort was made to protect settlers from Mi'kmaq raids.
In the late 1990s, a place called Mastodon Ridge opened near the highway. This attraction was built because a mastodon skeleton was found nearby. Mastodon Ridge has a craft store, a toy store, and mini golf. It also has an interpretive centre where you can see some of the mastodon's bones.
Stewiacke has many useful services for its residents. There is a pharmacy, a grocery store, and places to eat. You can also find gas stations, a hardware store, and an 18-hole golf course. A new elementary school now serves the town's children.
The town's volunteer fire brigade is very special. It was the first in North America to use a special foam to put out fires. They have also been leaders in using new fire trucks and equipment.
A major event happened on April 12, 2001. A railway switch on the CN Rail line was tampered with. This caused a Via Rail Canada train, the Ocean, to derail. This happened as the train passed through the town. Several buildings and train cars were damaged. Many people were hurt, but thankfully no one died.
On June 30, 2021, Stewiacke was hit by an EF1 tornado. In 2023, the famous Boston Christmas Tree came from Stewiacke.
