Stine Canal facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Stine Canal is an important waterway located in Kern County, California. It is a special kind of channel called an irrigation canal. Its main job is to carry water to farms and other places that need it. This helps crops grow in the sunny, often dry, climate of California.

What is the Stine Canal?

The Stine Canal is a man-made channel that moves water. It helps farmers get water to their fields. This process is called irrigation. Without canals like Stine Canal, it would be much harder to grow food in many parts of California.

Where Does the Stine Canal Start?

The Stine Canal begins its journey from another canal called the Carrier Canal. You can find this starting point near SR 99, which is also known as the Golden State Freeway. This is where the water first enters the Stine Canal.

Where Does the Stine Canal End?

The canal travels a long way before it reaches its end. It finishes at a large water storage area, called a reservoir. This reservoir is located on Bear Mountain Boulevard, which is also known as SR 223. It's just a bit east of Gosford Road.

The Canal's Journey Through Kern County

From where it starts, the Stine Canal flows mostly south. For a while, it follows along a road called North Stine Road.

  • After it passes a major road called Stockdale Highway, North Stine Road changes its name to Stine Road.
  • When the canal gets near Ming Avenue, both the road and the canal make a turn. They start heading southwest.
  • Just south of Planz Avenue, another canal branches off. This is the Farmers Canal, and it flows towards the west.
  • The Stine Canal keeps going south, staying close to Stine Road.
  • When it reaches Taft Highway (SR 119), the canal shifts its path a bit. It moves west and then runs alongside Ashe Road.
  • It continues to travel south, slowly moving more and more to the west.
  • Finally, the Stine Canal reaches its destination. It ends at the reservoir on Bear Mountain Boulevard, east of Gosford Road.

This long journey helps deliver water to many different areas, supporting agriculture and communities in Kern County.
