History of Stockholm
How Stockholm Got Its Name
In 1854, over 200 people moved to this area from a poor part of Sweden called Bjurtjärn socken. They settled at the bottom of the Mississippi River bluffs. These Swedish immigrants named their new community Stockholm, just like the capital city of Sweden.
Early Jobs and Industries
When Stockholm was first settled, people mostly worked in fishing and clamming. They caught thousands of barrels of fish from Lake Pepin to sell in cities to the east. Clamming was also important because the shells were used to make buttons.
However, after about 20 years, there were not enough fish or clams left. This meant the fishing and clamming businesses ended. Later, when the Burlington Railroad was built through Stockholm, a new industry started: shipping ice. Stockholm was the only place on Lake Pepin where ice was collected and sent to big cities.
