The Stockton post office started delivering mail in 1837. Back then, mail came from Montgomery, Alabama, by a special coach called a stagecoach, twice a week. Later, in 1855, the U.S. government started a new mail service. Steamers, which are boats powered by steam, carried mail between Mobile, Stockton, and Claiborne, Alabama. These boats stopped at Stockton twice a week, connecting it to the stagecoach line that went to Montgomery.
