History of St George's Church
Building a New Church
St George's Church was first a Presbyterian church. It was built between 1888 and 1890. The church was designed by John Bennie Wilson, an architect from Glasgow.
The new building was needed because the old church on Villiers Street was too small. The people attending the church needed more space.
Who Helped Build It?
A lot of money for the new church came from Sir Robert Appleby Bartram. He was a local shipowner. He even helped start the building work on February 7, 1889.
The church was made from red sandstone. This stone came all the way from Dumfries, a town in Scotland. The design of St George's Church was inspired by another church called Crescent Church, Belfast in Northern Ireland.
Recent Changes to the Church
In 2007, the church joined with another church. This was the West Park United Reformed Church. After a few years, in 2014, they decided to use only the St George's building. The West Park building was then sold.
